Giving back is more than just an act of kindness. It’s an opportunity to take responsibility by supporting and advocating for projects, people, and organizations in need. Many people are afraid of committing to a project or service because their time may be limited or they don’t see the return on investment. However, what many fail to consider is that small acts make big impacts.

There are so many ways to serve the community; whether it’s virtually, in-person, for a day, or for a year, you can commit as much or as little as you wish. Regardless of how, serving the community is such rewarding and valuable experience. It’s as though, those who are giving are the ones who are receiving, too.

Four benefits of serving the community:

Stepping out of your comfort zone

Being uncomfortable means growth. Taking the step to engage with new people and experiences will test your vulnerability. Whether you’re applying for volunteer opportunities online or inquiring about them in-person, you will be seeing and engaging with new faces. That alone is challenging you to do something that you typically wouldn’t. Take the time to practice your social skills and challenge yourself to make new connections.

Improving your hobbies and/or skills

Volunteering means contributing your time and skills at no cost. Most volunteer opportunities aren’t seeking experts, but instead passionate helpers. You can certainly sign up to volunteer and practice a special skill or hobby that you want to develop. Whether it’s event planning, baking treats, photographing an event, playing an instrument or anything else, there is a place for you to help in your community.

Networking and connecting with others

Once you start volunteering you will begin to meet so many amazing people in and outside of your community. Some may become close friends, business partners, or even family. It’s important to always keep in mind what connects you to these individuals: your selflessness and willingness to contribute your time and heart to a project. It’s always great to unite with people who share similar values as you.

Making the world a better place

There is a rewarding feeling that comes with volunteering. You feel energized, happy, rewarded, and accountable. Like Mother Teresa once said, “it’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” You will feel satisfied to know that you are working to better your community and in turn making the world a better place for all of us.
