“Hi, my name is Daphne Alva…” 👋 That’s exactly what I used to practice in front of my mirror before every interview, networking event, or big moment.
Recently, I’ve been reflecting on what my name means to me, especially as I prepare to take my partner’s last name. My last name has been with me through it all—good days and bad, on soccer jerseys, college applications, diplomas, recognitions, and even as a part of my personal brand. It’s been a constant companion, carrying the stories of my parents, grandparents, and ancestors, reminding me of where I come from.
I remember attending a college conference in 2015 where they offered free brand audits. I nervously requested a review of my recently launched website and social media account. They told me my brand was fantastic—but there was something missing: my name! That moment influenced me deeply. Since then, I’ve explored so many ways to bring my name into my work, even experimenting with branding as Alvadaphne for a short period of time. I later came to realize that Daphne Alva has always been embedded in Fierceday, and that connection will always remain; just like Alva will forever be a part of me and my story. As I prepare to step into this new chapter, I’m accepting that taking my partner’s name isn’t about leaving behind my roots—it’s about honoring them in a new way. Just like in marriage, we’re bringing together our stories and experiences, blending them into something uniquely ours. It deepens our journey, adding new layers to who we are together while still holding on to everything that’s shaped us individually. There’s one month until I’m officially Mrs. Castro!

🌼 By the way, that’s Minty Melissa tea blend from Stinging Nettle Apothecary in Catskills, NY, in my pretty mug, which was gifted to me by my dear friend Sabrina.
